Photos and a couple bits of video of Teagol and her seven pups as they reach two days old. Everything seems to be going well. All pups are vigorous and gaining weight. The first week of tending her pups is hard on Mum, as the at birth pups are unable to regulate their own body temperature and their internal temperature is 3°C lower compared with what it will be by the time they are 5 weeks old (35.5°C instead of 38.5°C). They are very sensitive to the cold and as soon as they lack warmth. their movements slow down and they will then become unable to suckle. Therefore the whelping box needs to be kept at an ambient temperature of at least 28°C to 30°C during the first week of their lives. This makes it hard for mother and she must be kept a close eye on and encouraged out of the whelping box at regular intervals for toilet breaks and in order to cool down from time to time.

So lovely seeing all of the photos and little videos. Teagol seems to be doing an amazing job as mum! There’s one pup that looks like it has a marking that looks a bit like a heart on their side, very sweet. Do you have to do much work to keep the ambient temperature up in the whelping box during this heat?

I use an infrared lamp to keep the temperature up along with a thermometer to keep a check. Yesterday during the hottest part of the day, I turned the infrared lamp off and kept an eye on the thermometer. Once I saw the temperature dropping then the lamp was back on.

So adorable, love all the little sounds they make. Teagol really is a very good mum and your dedication is also plain to see, well done.
