Blottie surprises us

It's been a long few days but, Blottie's temperature dropped yesterday morning. This morning at 6.15 am she gave birth to her first pup, a Blenheim boy and the only boy she has in this litter. She finished up at 2.05 pm, giving birth to an amazing eleven pups weighing from 9 1/4 ounces to 12 1/4 ounces.
She did it all with her inimitable style and grace. So there's one Blenheim boy and all the rest are girls. Four tricoloured girls, three black and white girls, and three Blenheim girls.
So now it's down to keeping them alive. Checking that they are all getting enough milk. As they are born, we make sure each pup gets to suckle from Mum and get that, so very important colostrum within minutes of being born.
Please, I don't want any phone calls or emails about these pups at this time. We will be keeping upto two of them and when we know which two, we will put up on the website, the pups that are available. That should be when they are between four to six weeks old.
The photos (below) are of the birth. Find the photo saying, "First born and only boy" and follow today's events as each pup was born.

Oh my goodness!!! Congratulations, Blottie! So glad to read the news and that the pups arrived safely. That’s wonderful. While I’ve read your blog enough, Jane, to understand that there’s still plenty of work ahead for Blottie, you and the rest of her first rate support team, it’s a joy to see that the birth went well.
All the best from me, Tom and half sibling to the pups, Tucker.

Well done Blottie and Jane. We'll be thinking of you through the next stage and wishing you and the pups onward. It's so funny, I woke up this morning and I thought I think Blottie is having her pups today! I've told Darcey that she has 10 more Aunties and a new Uncle - although she was mostly interested in tearing up some cardboard I must say.

Yes, that's forty pups over four litters. An average of ten pups a litter and all born naturally. Amazing that at nearly seven, she has had such a large litter and naturally. I was very worried waiting that she had become so large that she would suffer uterine inertia and as time stretched between her drop in temperature and starting active labour, I was glad to see that first pup and that she then produced each pup quickly and all within minutes of birth strong and latched on suckling.

Ernest has pretty impressive stats as well, with at nearly six years old having five litters and fiftyone pups. His average is 10.2 pups conceived per litter but, as we know he does have the easy part of the deal when it comes to producing pup.

Congratulations to you all from Jackie, Nigel and 'Eddie '
Although the hard work now begins it will be so worthwhile as Blottie has proved to be an amazing mother and produces puppies with lovely characteristics and personalities - if Eddie is anything to go by.
