I love reading your blog and have followed it for 8 or 9 years now. I was just wondering if all your dogs are accepting of new puppies/dogs coming into the house? Are there any that find the new adjustment difficult? I’m just curious, your dogs seem to have such lovely temperaments.

Hello Erika,

the younger a dog comes into our pack the quicker and more accepting they are of them.
A puppy will quickly be accepted, an older dog takes a bit more time to be fully intergrated into the pack and you have to be a bit more careful.
Our pack is mostly made up of dogs that have been born here and having been brought up in a pack are very attuned to the langauge of the pack. Puppies coming in will end up being mothered. Whether their own or not, a good natured bitch with strong maternal instincts cannot help, but take a pup under her wing. Billy has caught the eye of a mother yet to be, Teagol, which is very lucky for Billy, as she falls under the protection of her mother, Blottie. Who along with her mother, Smudge and Grandmother, Millie has inherited the temperament and confidentce to hold a high rank within our pack. He gets a lot of protection forging a friendship with Teagol. She treats him like her own, allowing him to jump all over her and only gets a reprimand if the tugging of her ears gets more than she can stand. Anyone else playing, what she considers getting a bit rough with him. She will intercept and calm down, checking he is okay.
I have had older dogs come into the pack over the years and you can see living in a pack is not easy for some and they would thrive more in a home as an only dog or just one or two other dogs. Sometimes they can be just a bit timid to live in a pack or they are to bolshy.
Maintaining a pack sometimes you have to base decisions on the welfare of the pack as a whole and if you have a dog within your pack that is causing rifts and scuffles of rivalry that never seem to get resolved. It is hard, but for the welfare of all your dogs, it is best to re-home a dog causing unrest. I have re-homed the occasional dog because I felt in the long run it would be best for them or/and best for the pack.

That’s really interesting, thanks for answering with so much detail. It’s lovely to see them all grow up. It sounds like Teagol will make a wonderful mum when the time comes.
